As we transition to the festive season ahead, it’s time to share the latest and most exciting updates from Build The Future. In this newsletter, we recount our enriching journeys from September to November and give you a sneak peek into the eagerly anticipated December events. Join us as we relive these memorable moments and look forward to what’s on the horizon.
SEPTEMBER’S SOUTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE: TEAMWORK AND DISCOVERY
Our Afrika Adventures/Build the Future Expedition in September with a vibrant team of 13 was a rich tapestry of teamwork and celebration in South Africa. Starting at the Luthuli Museum, the team embarked on a cultural and culinary exploration along the Durban promenade, relishing an array of outstanding burgers and diverse dishes.
Each workday was marked by significant contributions and collaborative spirit. The healthcare team skillfully adapted to each child’s needs, demonstrating compassion and expertise. Meanwhile, the work team, in partnership with Thobani and his crew, faced new challenges head-on, fostering an atmosphere of learning and teamwork.
A highlight of the trip was our visit to Thula Thula, where we were captivated by the majestic beauty of wildlife, deepening our connection to nature. The expedition’s spirit of joy and learning was further exemplified during the celebration of Lola’s 15th birthday, a moment that brought us all closer in a shared experience of happiness and festivity.
The adventure concluded with an enthusiastic exploration of the Ballito Farmer’s Market, perfectly capturing the essence of our time in South Africa - a blend of joy, learning, and engagement with the local community.
SEPTEMBER’S CAPE TOWN JOURNEY: IMPACT AND CELEBRATION
Our Cape Town trip in September with Crossroads was a vibrant mix of impactful work and unforgettable fun. The group, filled with inspiring individuals, made a significant difference at Agape Educare Centre in Zola, enhancing the school and engaging joyfully with the children.
We packed meals with Rise Against Hunger and took an exciting trip to Monkey Town with 120 kids, adding to our community service. Unpredictable weather led to an impromptu yet memorable visit to Table Mountain and a delightful detour to a local winery.
The journey also included a night of lively karaoke, where team members showcased their singing prowess. Educational visits to the District 6 Museum and Robben Island provided deep insights into the region’s history, enriching our understanding and connection to Cape Town.
The trip was sweetened with visits to Charly’s Bakery, Mojo Market, and Moro Gelato, capping off a week of meaningful interactions, celebrating milestone birthdays, and creating lasting friendships. This group was a testament to the joy and impact that come from working and celebrating together.
GLOBAL CONNECTIONS IN OCTOBER
While October didn’t feature our usual activity, it was a month filled with meaningful personal and global developments. Phillip and Baylee embarked on a trip to visit our Build the Future counterparts in the Netherlands to foster stronger international ties. While there, they were able to meet new board members, discuss exciting updates, and share the mission and vision of Build the Future in front of multiple audiences.
Two young boys in the Netherlands have been riding their bikes across town and going door to door to collect bottles to earn money by recycling to donate to Build the Future. Their father visited South Africa years ago and shared stories of his experience. The boys decided they wanted to be a part of building the future and took matters into their own hands. While visiting, Phillip and Baylee were able to meet with the boys, receive a check and further spread awareness by meeting with the local newspaper. The boys are also challenging others to join in their efforts and make small sacrifices to make a big difference in the world.
Back at home, Clive kept the wheels turning, hosting a small media team that helped spotlight our ongoing projects. His dedication ensured that our initiatives continued to thrive, even as other team members were abroad. This balance of personal milestones and continuous commitment to our cause underlines the unique spirit of our team - where personal growth and global impact go hand in hand.
